Cardboard terrorists as villains. It was old before 9/11, and it's old after 9/11.

Also the terrorists being Middle Eastern. Yes, Middle Eastern terrorists are more likely, but people from there are certainly not the only people who engage in terrorism.

Rings coming off of explosions in space. It was cool the first time I saw it in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country.
