I did two things to improve my LCD performance. The first is kind of funny: I updated the driver software for my video card. Whatever older version I was on did not drive the monitor well. When I updated the driver, the colors were richer, and contrast much better.

The second thing I did was to buy a Spyder2 monitor calibration tool. I can't remember the exact model, but it is a Spyder2 Plus or Pro. I found this review through Google. Using the calibration tool has improved the color balance and brightness/contrast of my LCD.
