Is it similar to the "invisible, intangible dragon"?
The invisible elf is part of an argument. Very often, we have folks in the ATM or CT forums argue for one thing or another, then say "you can't prove me wrong!" This is my response to that: If I say there is an invisible elf in my yard, how would you prove me wrong? (And, for the purposes of the argument, you can assume that the elf can't be detected or affected by objective means.)

Anyway, the point is that it isn't up to others to prove someone wrong, one needs to provide evidence for one's argument.
