I will point out something about human character.

Noone learns a lesson in a moment. It takes time for a lesson to really sink in and then once it has, a person can apply that lesson to his life.
Perhaps enough time didn't pass yet. But duely deserved compliments for taking that first step are just the encouragement needed to continue taking those steps.
