It's not the regular traffic. It happens on days when a story gets picked up by Slashdot, Digg, etc. For a few hours the traffic on the website goes up by a factor of 100X or more. So, in order to be able to handle that, I'd have to pay for 100X the computing power, all the time, just for the situations when I get a traffic spike.
I'd rather just suffer through the occasional traffic spike than pay the enormous amount of money to keep the site on high alert all the time.
