The OP raises a good point.
If so, it would be his first. This particular poster does not have a history of making well-reasoned (or even purposeful) points. As near as I can tell, he prefers to rattle cages for no good reason and then disappear for a while.
It is a ridiculous statement to put on a plaque on another world.
That was not the original poster's point. His point was that leaving behind any message at all must be proof somehow that NASA was aware of lunar inhabitants that would read it.
Of course you're welcome to your opinion about the propriety of the statement. I don't think it was an inappropriate sentiment during the darkest period of the Vietnam War. Apollo was a conspicuous departure from the prevailing atmosphere of military conquest.
Not to go into the whole "MANkind" thing...
