Hmmm....It would depend on the film. Sensitive film would have had problems but less sensitive (daylight) films would not. I don't remember the details but it was just low speed film used by NASA on the moon. If this kind of film can survive in my camera after passing through an airport X-ray machine, I think they could survive the radiation belts. I would not be surprised if NASA took the extra precaution in shielding the film packages/cameras.
As for the dead astronauts, did we receive any names? If you have a name, you can see if it is true. People do leave paper trails and an astronaut dying would be able to be determined.
As with all conspiracy theories, we are left with I know somebody who knew somebody who should have knonw that this was true. What do I think of that? Utter nonsense. Provide facts (things that can not be disputed) and not wild-*** rumors if you want people to believe this kind of garbage.
