Why doesn't y = y - intercept?
m = slope but why doesn't x = x intercept?
This may not be the problem, but could be:

The symbol used for the minus sign is ambiguous, and the term
"intercept" is not handled consistently.

b = y - intercept

Does that mean

b equals y minus the y intercept?

b equals y minus the x intercept?

b equals the y-intercept?
