Electronic circuit component makers mark their parts with a date-of-manufacture code, generally the month and year. For the smallest surface-mount devices there isn't enough room for four digits, so a letter is used to represent the year, and a digit or letter for the month (months 10, 11, and 12 are O, N, and D respectively).
The year codes run from 1998, which is J, through 2009, which is W (skipping O and Q). Now, if you follow that pattern to its conclusion, you get X, Y and Z for 2010, 2011, and 2012 respectively.

Can't they continue with the greek alphabet after this? Or maybe the cyrilic one? That would give at least another 20 years or so ....
... or of course, with China being the up and coming nation, what about using chinese characters instead? That would have to be good for about 2000 years, at least ...
