I don't see why people have a problem with it being flat on a local scale, but toroidal on the complete scale.

The Earth is a sphere (sort of) on its complete scale, but a perfectly flat level works just fine on local scales.

When you have something extremely long, like a space shuttle landing runway, it is flat all along the surface, but curves with the shape of the earth.
