If this is wrong, I got it from wikipedia. If it's right, ah hell, I still got it from wikipedia.

The experiment was made during an eclipse. It was to test Einstein Relativity theory by studying gravitation-induced red shift of spectral lines in the Sun.

I'm not really sure how close that is but thats my guess.
