Depending on your definition, you can still have no neighbours. Depends on where you're willing to live and how close you count "neighbours." Depending on that latter definition, there has never been a time when you could choose not to have neighbours.
My mom knows her neighbours. My sister is in her neighbourhood association, a thing we didn't even
have back home. And yesterday, on my way back from a walk, I had a nice chat with a couple of people I don't know who were sitting out in the sun in front of their apartment.
