Yeah, but I remember them saying the same thing in the last 10 years about soy (at least here in the Ohiah' valley). And I believe there's been a back-and-fourth down south'urn way with tobacco v. other crops.
It's supply and demand; as one crop comes into demand, it gets (as they say 'round 'ere) "growed" more than others, which drives the price of others up. Once the price of another crop is attractive to farmers, they switch to that, which eventually drops the price, but raises the price of the previous crop. Etc. etc.
Of course, there's other factors *cough*oil*cough* that raise the cost of farming regardless of crop.
