And that's a fundamental problem with the series. Cylons were invented by Colonial humans a few decades ago. They're artificially intelligent machines. Anything organic and with a longer history than that, such as the human-looking "Cylons", must by definition be not a Cylon but something else. And most of the evidence we're given says that what "else" they are is simply humans, with some modifications.
