The Weekly World News once said that aliens mutilated cattle simply because they enjoyed eating beef. I don't know why the aliens couldn't just break into a grocery store; they wouldn't have to go through all the trouble of slaughtering the cattle, and stealing a few steaks from a freezer wouldn't attract as much attention as leaving mutilated cattle in a field.
