I thought cosmic log on msnbc yesterday had a fairly informative article about this subject. A good balance of "laymanism" and technical background (IMO)
The Benefits of Black Holes
It's basically an interview with Michelangelo Mangano who is one of the authors of the safety report.

I read the article and it is well presented. I found this question interesting:-
Quote:
Q: And because black holes would imply that extra dimensions exist, that would be a signal achievement for physics. Would that provide the first evidence that all this crazy talk about extra dimensions is true?
A: That would certainly be the most compelling indication that indeed we live in more than four dimensions. Philosophically, that would be at the same level as special relativity or quantum mechanics. That would be a major revolution in our view of the universe – well beyond the Higgs, well beyond supersymmetry and anything else that we have thought of.

So I would assume if Geneva does disappear into a great hole in the ground as predicted by Nostradamus then other models would then come in for due consideration. Naturally in one of those models the nuclear weak force is variable and may only have a very limited window of opportunity to dilute high level material used for power and weapons, industrial and medical purposes.
From the home page of the CERN site is this:-
Quote:
Our understanding of the Universe is about to change...
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionise our understanding, from the miniscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

My hope is that they are correct for the right reasons.
