As for the "Dr" bit, I don't think that fools a lot of people, after all there are thousands of doctors on the planet, and they would use their degree to try and get readers. Anyway, it's the argument from authority falacy, not a good thing for a skeptic to commit.
I think, just the authors name is enough, and it shows that they have confidence that they can get readers, and be taken seriously without having to show that they have a degree, plus he is already quite well known.
