What about artificial intelligence?

If an AI is programmed to "think" it is alive, and is able to improve itself and have the capacity for learning and growing, is it alive? Is the only thing preventing us from making living AI at the moment limitations in the technology?

As for biological life I think my signature makes my opinion on that pretty clear.
