almost everyone I know thinks I'm a raving lunatic whenever I mention stuff like the LHC, so you're definitely not alone! One friend I'd characterise as an atomic sceptic. We got in to a deep and meaningful about atomic structure and electromagnetic force, and I made the mistake of using my desk as an example. He said "Mate, you're full of cr*p - smack your head on the desk and tell me if it hurts..."
