I defer to Jon on all questions relating to geology. Saying (as the abstract does) there were
dramatic burst(s) of magmatism lasting a few million years before 1.8Ga ago doesn't bother me, but claiming (as the media report does) the Earth was covered in lava that recently seems wrong. How could life have survived?
