For the $250 range the Yamaha DD's aren't bad.

I pop'ed up to the $500 range and got the Roland SPD-S, which has the advantage that you can store sounds on a CompactFlash card and thereby use REAL drumhit samples. Also functions as a recorder/sampler, too.
