You might be interested to read about lorentz force turning. Using the fact that a charged object moving through a magnetic field experiences forces at right angles to its direction of trael through the field, a space ship extending long highly charged cables could possibly ride or manouver on the magnetic field of the Milky Way.

Not entirely sure this is what your after, but maybe it could be something else to look into.
