Maglev is proven technology, but it requires magnetic fields about a million times stronger than Earth's magnetic field to produce useful thrust in Earth's atmosphere. Magnetic fields are weaker in 99.9999% of the volume of space in our solar system. Super conducting magnets help, but they stop super conducting in very strong magnetic fields. Airborne and space maglev thus is awaiting much stronger super conducting magnetic fields. If we ever develop spacecraft that travel at 99% of the speed of light. Maglev will be great for decelerating the space craft as it approaches most any solar system. At this enormous speed, lines of magnetic force are crossed at sufficient speed to produce one or two g of deceleration from a modest mag sail in a weak magnetic field. Sorry I have no link, but a search of magsail may turn up more details. Neil
