That makes a whole lot more sense than what I’ve read in many quantum mechanics books.

The way this was expressed in many books in the 1980s and ‘90s was that the atomic particles don’t do anything until we “see” them. This is like the Schrodinger’s cat hocus pocus, and that is metaphysical baloney. I spent a lot of money on quantum mechanics books before I began to realize what they were talking about was “the shining of light on the particles” so that we could “see” them. The actual “seeing” of them does nothing at all.
