Default about the Mayan 2012 item

Hello

Seeing I have been checking out the BadAstronomy website from time to time, thought I'd better join a forum or three.

I have been doing some research about this Mayan 2012 item, and while doing some 'googling' came across an earlier Topic here about this matter.

Anyway I would like to make a some comments regarding this particular conjunction of the ecliptic with the galactic equator.

It was the winter solstice of 1998 that got as close to the eclipic/galactic conjunction as it could. In other words when the centre of the sun ran over it.

Now seeing that the sun is 1/2 degree wide, and precession moves at 1 degree per about 72 years, then the sun running over this conjunction point goes on for some 36 years.

So what we have is that this event started about 1980 and might finish up around 2016.
A rather long 'eclipse' isn't it ?

As for what it all is supposed to mean, I think that can be left to the nutters. Thank goodness the galactic centre is some 6 degrees further south or else we might all get 'fried' somehow.

Cheers ems
