furthermore, what's with this tenfold speed increase? Where did this come from?

ASL = at sea level? Ummm, that's a bit misleading. Either you are reading IAS (indicated airspeed) or TAS (true airspeed). Altitude comes into play to figure out the IAS to TAS conversion.

It's interesting to note that the speed of sound decreases with altitude. Above 60,000 it's around down around 660 mph...so let's see if your IAS is reading 3.2 Mach then

3.2Mach * 660MPH/Mach = 2,112 MPH TAS.
