Something that came up in a recent conversation was the 'Shark Attack Conspiracy' that was building during the months before the eleventh of September 2001.
There was a series of media reports on people being attacked by sharks along the US east coast, while the actual cause of this series was the fact that it was a 'slow news' period, I can remember reading some claims that 'Terrorists' had unleashed 'trained attack sharks'
to ravage America. I can also remember people (even in Australia) trying to 'make sense' of what was in fact just a quite random series of events.
