It's hard to control something that is at minimum 6 months away. Unless, of course, you use nasty coercive methods (eg. hold family hostage, threaten to detonate nukes, etc.)
Mars is the New New World. (Unfortunately, it's not exactly an upgrade from Old World conditions.)
