The problem with the Viking experiments was that Viking landed in a locatin where life probably should not have been expected near the surface (even if life does exist on Mars).
So even a negative result doesn't seem very final to me.
We need to run new experiments at more interesting locations (near possible thermal features and near the edges of the polar caps), which are spots that are technically difficult for landings and are not close to the equator making solar panels inefficient.
