I just Imagined Hoagland announcing the discovery of an alien statue and even a leftover scale bar from during the construction on Mars, clearly indicating the Martians had to stop at instant due to some terrible event which wiped out all intelligent life on Mars. This fact is further proven in the unfinished appearance of the Alien statue.

After that he plugs a link to his discovery of another statue on Mars which honours Mankind (!) (or at least their face), and even a deserted city, partially destroyed in those same terrible events. Their knowledge of the existence of mankind is further proven by the fact that they taught us their Metric system, clearly indicating ancient contact between both species. :roll:
