That's why Google is coming up with more diversified search features that are separate from one another. For example they have the standard search engine, they have the Froogle service which lets you compare online prices of items, they have the beta of
Google Scholar for searching through academic information from journals, etc., and Google Video search, which searches through TV program transcripts, and Google News, to, well, search through news items around the world. The diversity allows for a really broadened use of Google's products and specialized search engines to get exactly the results you want.

How many of you even go past the first page 50% of the time? 75%? 99%? 1 %?
|
Why is that a bad thing? I rarely go past the first couple of pages because the results are relevant to the extent that I always find what I want in those first couple of pages.

Think of the influence that search has on our access to information. Not that Google has gone bad or anything, but we should be vigilent. I see Google still has it's competetors on a search page for search engines.

I think the fear of being restricted access to information because of Google would be a bit overblown. Not only does Google have very strong competitors in Yahoo! and Microsoft, but these search engines have also gained market share, as you can see in
this news item.
EDIT: To remove a paragraph which I posted after misreading part of beskep's post.
