I use more of a commando method solely for personal satisfaction, but perhaps that's worth a shot for you.

It's pretty bad, when the only option that MS provides is a registry edit. Not that it's a particularly hard task or anything. I don't have the problem with Windows Messenger running on startup anyways, though I've had that problem with other peoples computers where it likes to hide in the background.
