The ring does that mean the ring of the supernova. Why would it take that long since 1987 to hit the outer layer of itself
You need to go back and read the previous few weeks of stuff too. There's more than just one page on it. A quick summary is the rings formed during the expansion/shrinkage of the star prior to the actual explosion as faster solar winds collided with slower winds and piled up gas into the rings.

The rings are not the outer layer of the star, they're formed from the gasses that got blown off by the solar winds.
