I thought that might be the case. It's another example of Microsoft trying to dominate the market by bundling it's software with windows. But if you look around you can usually find better stuff for free or low cost.

In this case, you should use TMPG. It's the best format converter I've seen. The basic model is free, and it's the only one I know of that can reliably convert WMV to other formats. Give it a try.
