I'm sure you meant to say that the wave is
transverse here (especially since you then speak about the wave being deflected to the side, which wouldn't be the case for a longitudinal wave, so it looks like a mistake of words rather than one of logic). Perhaps having Lyndon continually saying that you're treating the wave as longitudinal left you with that word on your brain.
