That's exactly what I think is happening.
The Fe ions are seen is SOHO images in the extreme UV (between 10-20 nm) with narrow filters; so in those images only the Fe in the solar surface is visible. Therefore the images are showing a uniform distribution of Fe and nothing else simply because the settings for the camera and filters prevent anything else to be seen. :roll:
