This is one of the most popular misconceptions about General Relativity, Cosmology, and the Big Bang!

If you can get hold of it - buy, or borrow from a library, the March 2005 edition of Scientific American has an excellent article by Charles Lineweaver on just this topic (here is a more technical version).
