I've looked around and cannot find anything on the sun having "mini-explosions" or huge flares that could reach Earth. Some white dwarf stars can go nova multiple times, and gamma-ray bursts from distant stars could have an impact on us, at least one researcher at the University of Kansas thinks that the Ordovician extinction may have been due to a gamma-ray burst.
