I think the question is well posed though, as nothing (but light, I think. Ask Grey) ever does cross an event horizon in the sense of time measured here on Earth (it is more than an illusion, it is real, for us here). How that connects with Hawking radiation is tricky, I think it has been visited before, maybe on the FAQ.
