While you are correct that Phil should update the review to incorporate his new knowledge of the book, the comparison to the 1953 George Pal film is still justified. Spielberg is a huge fan of the Pal film and incorporated references to it in many of his early films, such as "ET" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." If you are a student of the film (as I am), you will see that nearly every shot of the Spielberg film contains a reference or homage to the Pal film.
The most frustrating thing about the new movie is that Spielberg had the budget and talent to do the film "right" and he threw it away on another stupid disfunctional family movie. The War Machines were pretty much *exactly* as I envisioned them based on the descriptions in the book.
