The term "reverse engineering" refers to taking an existing piece of technology built by somebody else, and taking it apart and figuring out how it works without access to the various design specs. It does
not refer to the process of taking an existing piece of technology that we already know how to build and figuring out a way to make it work "in reverse," e.g. figuring out a way to make an air conditioner operate as a heat pump.
