Well, Neptune hasn't swept Pluto from its path, yet. So until it does, Neptune will have to be demoted, too.

I disagree... let me explain.

The "cleared the neighboorhood" argument is basically the "orbital dominance" scheme that I and many others in this forum have been proposing for a long time.

I threw that statement out with my toungue halfway in my cheek.

My point was that the IAU's 3rd part of the definition is too vague. Doodler brought the point home even better than I imagined.

I hadn't thought of the orbital resonance as a form a "clearing out" the path -- that's a good point (and I guess I need to read alot more posts/threads in the future).

So, Neptune can stay, but Jupiter has to go. :lol
