Hum,
after a bit of research i found that there was a report of an exceptionally bright (greater than mag 13) meteor at 22:52 , on the 11th September, over N Carolina, US.
The meteor was heading in a west to northwest direction.

(i just re-read your post and realised that you live in america - so you did not see the New Zealand meteor)
