By now, the Cassini mission has certainly generated enough data that we should be able to set an upper limit to the mass of the rings (which must be less than that of a modest sized moon).

As to your other ideas about the source of the dust, I'm not sure HOW you think that this dust could have come up from Saturn and gotten into a stable orbit around the planet.
