From the data generated by Cassini and other studies, it appears that the major source of the particles in the rings is from a smashed up moon or moons. These moons could have been captured originally by Saturn such as a comet or asteroid passing by. Enceladus has Ice volcanoes which is feeding one of the rings with new icy particles.
Lots of info on the Cassini website.
