Their adherence is not surprising... A sociology book I read in college, "When Prophecy Fails" details the reactions of followers of a 1950's UFO cult, which when the saucers repeatedly failed to show up on the predicted dates, (which kept being changed, sound familiar?), still would not leave their leader. Something in human nature wants to believe. It's a good read and still in print I believe.
