Popularity is nice and is a reasonable indicator there is substance behind it, but it is not, necessarily, solid grounds for merit. Which of his ideas were truly original? If I didn't know better, I would assume Kant originated the idea of the Milky Way consisting of many distant stars. He didn't, Galileo, more than century earlier, beat him to it, and used his telescopic results to help justify his claim.
