Default Rate a thread

While we're waiting for reputation to come along you can rate a thread. This allows people to find the best threads out of the thousands that will no-doubtably be made. The scale is from 1-5, with 5 being the highest. The rating of a thread is the average of the individual votes.

Please do not abuse this system, having a whole lot of 5 star threads is a waste. A rating of three is an average thread, nothing special. Voting is simple and takes only a few moments of your time.

So how do you vote? At the top toolbar there is a drop down menu with the heading "Rate this thread". Clikc that and then choose the appropriete rating for your thread. Finally click "vote now". Thats it!

I've rated this thread 5, just as an example. Its more like a 2, but whos to argue. You could vote for the appropriete rating.

We should also strongly resist to use the rating as an agree/disagree indicator. Rating should be based on the quality of the content.

I'd suggest that when the admis have got time they set the board so that you need a few votes before a thread gets its stars. Currently it only takes one voter to rate a thread.

This is a tweakable setting.

Re: BA's post to remove it, not that I have strobg feelings, but I'd say the reason that few threads had ratings was not because it was being mildly abused, but because most people don't give a toss about rating them, hence it's not much of a loss.

Here’s the ones with ratings that I subscribed to, and I think I voted a couple of times (Acronym and Word). The rating still shows on my subscription threads, but I only am using stats from page 1.

• The Acronym Game (7 votes 3.57 average)
• What was the Star of Bethlehem? (1 vote 5 average)
• Rate a thread (5 votes 3.00 average)
• Word Association Game (8 votes 3.62 average)
• Squyres Update (3 votes 3.33 average)
• What would it be like to live forever? (2 votes 3.00 average)

From the BA's thread...
Where in the world was this being abused?

My rating pattern could have been seen as abusive. I was fond of rating threads, in Against the Mainstream and Conspiracy Theories, 1-star when they already had a single 5-star vote. Five-stars just had too much of a hey-look-at-me effect.

So, when I saw one that invited it, that asked for it, I looked. And rated. And, I'm a tough grader.

Maybe better would have been to ask the powers that be for ratings to be turned off (yay!) or thread rating-results delayed until a significant number of ratings were offered. It didn't appeal to me that just one individual's 5-star rating could give a thread apparent high esteem.

I didn't know if those were options, so I just just steadfastly counterbalanced those single 5-star ratings I saw, so that a thread couldn't really be 5-star until a bunch of people rated it highly enough to offset my one curmudgeonly skeptical 1-star rating. I wanted 5-star threads to really earn that rating.

I know I rated one thread some time back, I may have done another. I thought of making "correction ratings" on a few threads, but like Phantomwolf, I really couldn't get that worked up over it, so I didn't bother. The fact is, the ratings never told me anything useful since they didn't bear any relation to whether I would want to read a thread or not. And since different people like different things, I don't see any use for "one size fits all" ratings anyway.

Thanks for turning off the ratings, they where a minor irritation, as they where essentially meaningless, so they only wasted space.

They were too much bother to rate anyway.

No loss for me. I never rated a thread and never noticed the ratings.
