I have been trying to get into the forum for about the last 2.5 hours and only now have gotten in (through the Universe Today link). Even now it is v_e_r_y s_l_o_w. Anyone know what's up?

I noticed that too. I'm having trouble getting a connection.

Same here, been getting a 503 error.

Ah, looks like we've been Slashdotted.

Hm. Well now we know that the BA's main site is on the same server as BAUT. I like trivia like that...

Yep. Those people over at slashdot are ruthless.

Bad Astronomy is hosted on the same server as BAUT. Phil's latest post on the Big Bang has generated a massive amount of publicity across all the big news sites. He got dugg, slashdotted, farked, and then some. So, the server's just been punished in the last couple of days. We're figuring some short and long term solutions to reduce the impact of this on the server.

So, was the site simply overloaded or was it a denial of service attack?

Never mind. Fraser posted while I was typing.

Just overloaded. Any one of those sites will bring a webserver to its knees. All three... forget about it.

It seems to be handling it pretty well, considering.

Phil stripped out all the functionality of his publishing system. So it just posts the HTML page, and that's it. He had to turn commenting off, etc.

Exclamation Wow

I just read the blog. (Somehow I missed this story till now.)
Phil is righteously angry.

I would have missed the blog in question if I hadn't seen this thread, and then I wouldn't be so angry I can hardly see straight. I hope this story absolutely saturates the web. Righteous anger suits the BA very well.

How many new BAUT members will we be getting, over the next few days, do you think?

I somehow lost the subscription to a thread in Questions and Answers called Could a toroidal planet be stable, which I started myself.

A year passed without new posts being added. When finally new posts were added, I did not notice this because the thread didn't show up in User CP. I noticed it a week later by coincidence (a new post had just been added when I checked New Posts), but now I wonder what else I am missing.

Were subscriptions carried over from the old forum? It's been less than a year.

Until now (11:04 EST) I have been unable to get on BAUT since about 17:00 yesterday. I tried both at work and on my ISP at home.

Not only BAUT, also badastronomy.com: both are only just online again.
