Default Server down Aug 15

Hi folks, just to let you all know, our server was offline for about 12 hours today. We're still not sure why it happened, but our hosting company was able to talk with it again. They're saying there were some problems with the file system on the server. We're still not sure why it happened, and what to do to fix it, but it might have something to do with the slow downs we've been experiencing.

I'll keep you posted when we know more. And I apologize for the delay.

It wasn't like we wanted this break, though. :-)

And no, we share a rack with no one. This forum is on its own little server (well, shared with some other stuff Fraser and I do, but that's it).

No doubt it's Phil's fabled yet ever-growing collection of naked astronomy shots. Er... that's naked eye astronomy shots.

I picture it being like the police control room in the Original Italian Job movie!

I believe there are still serious problems. The board was slow all morning and I could not connect at all for several hours (only got back on after lunch).

Part of the problem is that one of the BA's blog articles got greenlit on Fark earlier today. (I was delighted to note that Phil "submitted the same article with a better headline". [sucking up] It really was, too. [/sucking up] It was somewhat vulgar, to my great amusement.)

It's complicated, but we are on our way to getting all this fixed. We have to upgrade the server to handle the load, and various other things will happen as well. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.

Probably a fatter pipe.

A higher speed connection to the Internet wouldn't hurt, either.

But the pipe and slippers - now there's an upgrade!

Still wish you'd increase the timeout time, though. It's a bit too short for my taste, and I doubt really enhances security a whole lot.

That can usually be remedied by ensuring the Remember Me? box is checked when you log in. Is that not working for you?
